Did you know? Thanksgiving edition

  • Thanksgiving has been observed every year in the U.S. since 1863. It replaced Evacuation Day, an informal national holiday held each November 25 before the Civil War to mark the British withdrawal after the American Revolution.
  • Since 1941, the law has set Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November, so it can land anywhere from November 22 to 28. In years when it falls on the 22nd or 23rd, it’s the second-to-last Thursday, not the last. Either way, it’s always the Thursday before the last Saturday of November.
  • Because it’s a federal holiday, U.S. government offices close, and the New York Stock Exchange and most financial markets close too.
